You don't always hear stories of attempted assassination of politicians in office in Malaysia but apparently, it does happen.

At least, it did in January last year, when suspected leader of terrorist group Anshorullah At-Tauhid came up with a game plan to kill the then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and several others in his cabinet.

Several news outlets reported that assistant director of counter-terrorism at Special Branch, Azman Omar, sharing the information at a roundtable discussion in Kuala Lumpur on Islamic extremism.

Senior cabinet ministers also targeted

Lim Guan Eng, Mujahid Yusof Rawa, Tommy Thomas
According to Benar News, Wan Amirul Azlan Jalaluddin confessed that he intended to stab Tun Mahathir, former Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, former minister in charge of Islamic affairs Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa, and former attorney general Tommy Thomas.

The suspected terrorist allegedly planned the attack in support of Islamic State (IS), a terror group which is no longer active.

IS was believed to be behind many terror attacks in the world in the past, but was squashed by the U.S. Special Forces in October last year.

With the death of its leader at the time, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and stricter border control in Syria, it is believed that the group's recruitment in Malaysia has been halted.

Wan Amirul Azlan Jalaluddin was charged in 2020.
According to the report, Amirul was arrested after he and his group made threats against the leaders, and shared it on WhatsApp.

Five others were arrested with him under the country's anti-terrorism act, SOSMA.

We're not sure why anyone would make threats on WhatsApp, but we're sure glad our authorities are so power that they could find and arrest those planning harm before anything bad happens.
