The company is a subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd or most commonly referred to as 1MDB.
Justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali found Najib guilty of one count of abuse of power, three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT), and three counts of money laundering.
This would be the first guilty verdict in a series of cases which Najib is facing relating to the 1MDB scandal.
The 67-year-old has maintained his innocence pertaining to the scandal and was even reported as saying that he was "shocked" to find the money in his account.
Donation? Seriously?
Najib later famously said that the money was in fact a donation."In my view, even at this juncture, when the accused was told of the impending donation from Jho Low, the accused should have taken steps to verify and adduce proof of the information."
"There were no details about the donations or whether it would come with conditions."
"Is it foreign aid, a grant or a loan? The accused could have picked up his mobile and communicated especially with his foreign affairs minister or the Saudi ambassador. Instead the accused, as PM, accepted a simple confirmation from Jho Low," said Justice Mohd Nazlan as reported by The Star when reading out his judgement.
Justice Mohd Nazlan later said that the defence had failed to establish beyond reasonable doubt the charges related to CBT.
He also said that the defence had failed to cast reasonble doubt on the three counts for money laundering and had earlier found Najib guilty for the charge relating to abuse of power.
"I therefore find the accused guilty and convict the accused on all seven charges," he said.
Najib's lead counsel, Shafee Abdullah then asked that sentencing and mitigation be adjourned to Monday but ad hoc prosecutor Dautk V Sithambaram objected to the request.
Justice Mohd Nazlan the adjourned the case and said that it would resume at 2pm today.
He has yet to decide on when he would sentence Najib.
So, guys, looks like we all just have to wait and see.
