While this writer’s SPM results from years ago aren’t worth discussing (Editor's Note: mine neither) and the topic still brings displeasure whenever it is brought up with their mother (ditto), other students who do well in the exams may expect to be treated to a nice meal by their parents or receive a small angpao. However, one student who scored straight As in his exam received the unexpected gift of a Playstation 5 (PS5) gaming console from his teacher.

In a post shared in the Facebook group PS5 Malaysia gang, additional mathematics teacher Siva Gopalakrishnan shared a photo and a video of him presenting his student with a PS5.

The caption read: “Congratulations to my student who scored straight As for SPM 2022. The important thing is that you got an A for Add Maths which is the subject that I teach. It is rare for a teacher and student to be gamers; he is also interested in games, so I gave him a PS5. Well deserved, boy.”

In the video, the young boy is seen excitedly receiving the gift from his teacher, presumably in the school hall after receiving his results. The boy greeted his teacher with a salaam before they happily posed for photos together. He excitedly said, “Thank you, sir” while a man in the background could be heard saying, “Play to your heart’s content”.

According to Sony’s website, the standard version retails at RM2,499, a generous gift even for parents to hand out to their child, let alone a teacher. The game console is also known to be hard to get one’s hands on, as it is frequently sold out in stores.

The teacher appeared to be a huge fan of the popular console himself, as his Facebook page included a post of a PS5 cake with the words “Happy Birthday, Siva”.

Praise and congratulations from Facebook users quickly poured in as others reminisced about their own results. User Ekhwan Rahim hilariously shared that they only received a box of 2B pencils when they achieved 10As.

Another user, Amnan ZA said that the teacher was so kind and that it was rare for teachers to present their students with such expensive gifts. They added that they hoped that the student would never forget their teacher.

User Gorgon Heksagon said, “Sir, can I also be your student? But I’m already 25 years old.”
