The government plans to stop the spinning once and for all.

According a recent news report, the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) have reportedly been ordered to take a close look at fidget spinners and the potential harm it could bring to Malaysians.

Its Minister, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, told local daily Berita Harian that the department will be collecting samples from the market to be sent to SIRIM for examination.

This came after several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) expressed concerns that fidget spinners could be modified and used as weapons to commit crime.

"This is a short term solution to determine that fidget spinners are not harmful to consumers in the country," Hamzah was quoted by the daily as saying.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry is reportedly mulling setting up restrictions for fidget spinners in schools, which is said to be a distraction for students.

However, its Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid told The Star Online that no action will be taken until the Ministry receive a full report.

"It is a new gadget and there are numerous views on its use. We need to wait for a full report from the authorities and stakeholders before discussing it in a committee at the ministerial level," he was quoted as saying.
