Are you one of those people who like to use your phone while you're behind the wheel? You better watch out!
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is coming down hard on those who fiddle with their phones while driving, according to a report by The Star Online.Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told the news portal that the JPJ will soon be using two types of camera to catch these drivers: static and mobile.
Those who are caught would have to pay a RM300 fine and have their Kejara points deducted.
Liow said such move was necessary to reduce the number of road accidents caused by drivers who constantly have their eyes glued on their smartphone screen.
He also added that this offence is one of 20 new ones that would soon be added into the Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS). If you don't know what that is, click here to read more about it.
However, Liow said it is perfectly fine to use navigation apps such as Waze and Google Maps, but your smartphone must be mounted on a phone holder.
He did not mention anything about skipping songs on Spotify though.
But whatever it is, there should be no reason why you should be fiddling your smartphone while you're driving. Like the wise Confucius once said: 'Man with hands on wheel and eyes on road, wallet won't explode'.
