Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has made the country proud by being ranked in the world’s top universities in 11 subjects with one new entrant, in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2022.

A statement on the university’s website said the subject areas are Engineering & Technology, Natural Sciences as well as Social Sciences & Management.

The statement quoted UTP vice-chancellor Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib as saying that for Engineering & Technology subject areas, UTP is now ranked 159th globally, from its previous position of 230th which means UTP is now ranked fourth best among its Malaysian counterparts. 

He said the university’s Petroleum Engineering subject is placed at 22nd and has maintained its Top 50 position, while for the Mineral and Mining Engineering subject, UTP is ranked at Top 60.

“With these rankings, UTP has retained its standing as the top university in the nation for both subjects for the third year in a row,” he said.

He added that eight other subjects are Top 150 for Engineering - Chemical (ranked third in the nation), Top 200 for Engineering - Civil and Structural (ranked fifth in the nation), Top 250 for Engineering - Electrical and Electronic (ranked sixth in the nation), Top 300 for Engineering - Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing (ranked sixth in the nation), Top 450 for Computer Science and Information Systems (ranked sixth in the nation), Top 500 for Chemistry (ranked sixth in the nation), Top 550 for Business & Management Studies (ranked 13th in the nation) and Top 600 for Physics & Astronomy (ranked sixth in the nation). 

The Materials Sciences subject also made its debut in the rankings and tanked Top 400 globally and sixth in the nation.


“We are pleased with the progress we made in the rankings. This achievement demonstrates our strong reputation globally in terms of our academic excellence through our advanced teaching and learning methods as well as our expertise and strengths as an industry-focused higher education institution in the vital industry-relevant areas.

“In addition, our intensive research, innovation and consultancy activities have collectively resulted in maintaining our rank globally,” he said.

Ibrahim said that UTP will continue to lead for excellence in academic, research and students’ experience by providing a world class learning and teaching environment to educate the next generation of responsible leaders and model global citizens.

“In research and innovation, we will support Petronas’ energy transition initiatives to move towards net-zero carbon emission (NZCE) as one of our key areas in our quest towards sustainable global prominence,” he said.
