With many economic sectors set to reopen amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, you might think that the number of cases are easing up worldwide.

That’s actually far from the truth.

According to a report in Reuters quoting the World Health Organisation (WHO), new coronavirus cases had their most significant daily increase ever as the pandemic worsens globally.

Don't let your guard down.

“More than six months into the pandemic, this is not the time for any country to take its foot off the pedal,” said WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Growing numbers

He said more than 136,000 new cases were reported worldwide last Sunday, with nearly 75 per cent of them in the Americas and South Asia.

Meanwhile, WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove said the pandemic is far from over and a “comprehensive approach” was essential in South America.

A total of 413,372 have died from the disease so far.
