If you haven't, fret not: a lot of people, including us, did not know one existed until recently.
She's doing alright
According to a report by Unilad, the only known albino orangutan on Earth has been photographed alive and well in a Borneo rainforest.The primate, named Alba, was rescued by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation in 2017 after she was discovered starving in a cage where she was kept as a pet by villagers in Kalimantan.
At that time, she was so unkept that she was underweight, dehydrated and covered in parasites.
After restoring her health, she was released back into the wild at the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park (BTNBBBR).
As a safety measure, the foundation electronically tagged the mammal for monitoring purposes. The foundation last observed Alba in February.
“I have received reports that Alba is capable of extensive exploration, skilful foraging, and deft nest building.
"She also socialises with other released orangutans within the national park. This is truly positive. We all hope that Alba continues to survive in this forest, and live wild,” said the head of BTNBBBR, Agung Nugroho, in a statement.
