Kau Vs Aku Ep 8: A Fist-clenching Finale Full of Gasps & Tears

Finally, the adaptation of Shieyruna’s Wattpad novel ‘Kau vs Aku’ aired their much-anticipated finale episode on Sooka. Following the chaotic and tumultuous 7th episode, the 8th showcased an unexpected side of everything the showrunners built throughout the season until the third act, of course.

The episode raised its curtains with a slow burn as Aulia took her time digesting Danish’s untimely departure. Months passed by, Aulia’s priorities shifted. Her character went through multiple phases of grief that moulded her into a totally different personality by the end of the episode.

The process was undeniably heartbreaking, especially if you’ve gone through a high school heartbreak. The difference is, in comparison with most of us, Aulia’s future seemed dim despite doing well in her SPM. Emir’s hand-in-marriage appeared as a major point of diversion, causing her to adjust and change the course of her life, just to fulfil her father’s wishes. These scenes were tragic, seeing the death of a young person’s potential and ambition to be the best at what she does.

The showrunners’ choice in highlighting child-marriage sets Kau vs Aku apart from the rest. The gloominess of Aulia’s present and future is a heart-breaking but brilliant portrayal of a child awaiting the day of her wedding. Imagine sitting for your SPM and at the same time, thinking about your big wedding day in the same year.

Thankfully, the aspects of sisterhood and friendship are strong pillars in the series. During her denial phase, Aulia threw a fit at her friends for poking fun at Emir and despite the hostility, Nina and Syafikah stood by the protagonist and helped her digest her pre-marital blues. For characters aged 17, the trio were mature in rationalising the issue - which proved to be pivotal points throughout the series.

Following her friend’s advice, Aulia decided to focus on the things she love: writing stories. With her willingness to go after her dreams, she did the unthinkable as a 17-year-old: make enough money and quietly fly off to another country. Admirably, she did it not just to pursue Danish, but also to further her studies there. However, as she was leaving KLIA, Danish can be seen on the escalator right behind her, possibly arriving from Melbourne, before the series came to a close. What a way to end a show!

The whole of episode 8 was a ruthless roller coaster ride with no brakes, no handles, just vibes and incredible storytelling. A near-perfect ending for Aulia’s teenage life, considering season two is all confirmed by Sooka. Well deserved, really.
