There is a saying that goes, “It’s never too late to start again,” and for one Malaysian mother, that could not be more true.
Ummul Afifah Husna Mansor got married at the young age of 14 and left school just a year later. Despite that, she never put her dream of succeeding academically to rest.
Now a 24-year-old mother of three, Afifah shared that she met her husband, Azri, through an online chatting application. At the time, Afifah was 13 and Azri was 16.

According to her, their relationship started out normally, but Azri was the one who asked her to marry him just two weeks after they got to know each other.
Afifah said her parents were aware of her relationship with Azri, but admitted that she was shocked and unsure when he asked for her hand in marriage.
“Back then, Azri would come to my house and ask my parents for permission to be my friend. We would hang out in front of my house."
She explained, “I admit I was shocked and unsure when he asked me to marry him, but after some time, I agreed. Besides, he was already working at a restaurant and had his own income. We got married with the permission of our families and followed the law.”
Afifah added that despite marrying at such a young age, she never regretted her decision and was thankful to have met her husband, whom she described as responsible.
It all began when she visited her child’s doctor
In an interview with Harian Metro, Afifah confessed that she had thought about continuing her studies but put it off several times, as she had grown comfortable with her life.
That changed when she visited a doctor with her child.
“The doctor gave me a letter and told me to refer my child to the emergency department. The doctor said it was difficult for them to explain my child’s illness because they knew my educational level."
“At that moment, I felt the need to pursue my studies. Furthermore, I had a friend who also married young but went on to build a career as a nurse in Australia,” she said.
Thankfully, her husband, Azri, 27, supported her dream. While Afifah prepared for the examination, he took on household responsibilities and cared for their children, aged four, six, and nine.
On top of that, Azri also planned to continue supporting Afifah’s future educational pursuits.

Despite having less than four months to prepare for the exam, Afifah, who registered as a private candidate last year, managed to score 2 As and 4 Bs in her SPM.
Afifah now plans to enrol in a long-distance diploma programme specialising in Computer Science.
“For me, it’s not too late to pursue my studies since I’m only in my 20s. My children are also getting older, so I can’t wait to study and eventually work.”
