In a video that has since gone viral, the man, believed to be a Chinese national, was visiting Malaysia on a business trip. While having breakfast at his hotel, he noticed the flag display and realised that China's flag was missing.
Upon noticing that the Chinese flag was not on display, the man appeared upset and called over a female manager to ask about it.
In the video, the manager appeared caught off guard by the sudden question. The tourist can then be heard saying:
"If you want to make money from Chinese people, please fly the national flag of China."
Netizens were quick to explain
Although the video ended there, social media users were quick to defend the hotel staff and explain why China's flag was absent from the display.
It turned out that the flags represented countries that had qualified for the FIFA World Cup. China was not among them.
While the tourist's question could be brushed off as simple curiosity, many social media users took issue with his tone, which they described as rude and entitled.
