Why Do Malaysian Shopping Malls Have Ladies' Parking? The Answer Lies In A Horrifying Real Case

AI Brief

  • Women's parking bays in shopping malls were introduced following the 2003 murder of Canny Ong to improve women's safety in parking areas.
  • Canny was abducted, raped and murdered by Ahmad Najib Aris, who was ultimately executed by hanging in 2016 after a 52-day trial.
  • In the aftermath of the case, shopping malls strengthened their security measures by placing women's parking bays closer to entrances and increasing CCTV surveillance and security patrols.

Ladies' parking bays have become a familiar sight in shopping malls across Malaysia, particularly in the Klang Valley. Reserved for women driving alone and mothers travelling with young children, these spaces are typically located near mall entrances to provide an added sense of safety and convenience.

Despite their intended purpose, some motorists continue to misuse these spaces to this day.

What many may not realise is that behind these pink parking bays lies a heartbreaking story that changed how shopping centres approach safety for female visitors.

The last dinner

In 2003, 28-year-old Canny Ong Lay Kian returned to Malaysia from the United States to visit her father, Ong Bee Jeng, who was recovering from cancer surgery.

Originally from Ipoh, Perak, Canny had moved to the US to further her studies, later building a career as an IT analyst. She married Brandon Ong and settled there permanently, though he remained in the US during her visit home.

On 13 June 2003, Canny joined her family and close friends for a dinner at Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC) to celebrate her father's successful surgery and mark her return flight to the US the next day. Tragically, it would be the last time they saw her alive.

As the evening ended, Canny headed to the basement car park to retrieve a parking ticket left in the family car while her mother, Pearly Visvanathan, and sister, Elsie Ong Lee Cheng, waited nearby. When she failed to return 20 minutes later, they went looking for her and discovered that the family's violet Proton Tiara was gone.

After initially being denied access to the mall's CCTV footage, the family eventually convinced security personnel to review the recordings. The footage showed the Proton Tiara speeding out of the car park and crashing through the boom gate. An unidentified man was at the wheel, while Canny sat beside him, visibly distressed and cowering in fear.

Two missed chances to escape

Three days later, the missing Proton Tiara was found abandoned in Taman Petaling. Hours later, a construction worker discovered a charred body hidden in a culvert near the New Pantai Expressway construction site at Batu 7, Jalan Klang Lama. DNA testing and dental records later confirmed the remains belonged to Canny.

Investigators found she had been raped, strangled, stabbed and set on fire. Former aircraft cabin cleaner Ahmad Najib Aris, 27, was arrested three days after the identification.

During investigations, police discovered that officers had actually encountered Najib and Canny shortly after the abduction. While patrolling in Kelana Jaya, Lance Corporal Subramaniam Ravichandran and his partner stopped the Proton Tiara after finding its occupants suspicious. Although unaware that Canny had been abducted, the officer noticed she appeared terrified.

It was later reported that Canny had attempted to signal for help, but her message went unnoticed. After obtaining both Canny's and Najib's identification cards, the officers watched as Najib suddenly fled. Subramaniam fired two shots and gave chase but eventually lost sight of the vehicle.

Canny was later spotted by Aminah Isahak after Najib stopped to replace a punctured tyre believed to have been damaged by a police bullet. Noticing that Canny appeared frightened and unusually silent, Aminah recorded the vehicle's registration number and alerted police. By then, however, the pair had already disappeared.

Investigators later believed Najib raped Canny beneath an unfinished bridge between 1 AM and 5 AM. Despite her pleas that she would not report the assault, he stabbed her twice in the abdomen before hiding her body and returning the next day with petrol to burn it in an attempt to destroy evidence.

Another witness, van driver Azizan Ismail, also crossed paths with Najib that night. He saw the suspect with a topless woman near the bridge but assumed they were a couple and thought nothing of it. Azizan later stole and sold Canny's mobile phone, leading police to initially identify him as a suspect before clearing him following Najib's arrest.

The motive

During the trial, Najib was described as a father of two with no prior criminal record. He eventually pleaded guilty to kidnapping, raping and murdering Canny.

Investigators later concluded that the crime was likely a case of mistaken identity. Evidence suggested Najib may have believed Canny was a former employer he held a grudge against, only realising he had abducted the wrong person after checking her identification. By then, it was already too late.

After a 52-day trial, Najib was found guilty and sentenced to death. He later filed multiple appeals, all of which were rejected. On 23 September 2016, more than a decade after Canny's murder, Ahmad Najib Aris was executed by hanging at Kajang Prison.

Aftermath

Following Canny's murder, many shopping centres across the Klang Valley began introducing women-only parking bays closer to entrances and security posts.

The goal was simple: reduce the distance women had to walk alone and improve visibility in parking areas.

Shopping malls also upgraded security measures by installing additional CCTV cameras, increasing patrols and improving surveillance systems around car parks.

More than two decades later, ladies' parking bays remain a visible reminder of a tragedy that shocked the nation and forever changed how many Malaysians think about safety in public spaces.

So the next time you see a pink parking bay, remember that it was not created as a privilege, but as a response to one of Malaysia's most horrifying crimes.
