TLDR

  • A 10-year-old boy, Leong Kuan Xuan, donated his stem cells to help his father, who was suffering from acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
  • His father, Leong Jun Hao, who was 29 years old at the time of his diagnosis, underwent a bone marrow transplant after receiving chemotherapy treatment.
  • Although the transplant was successful, Jun Hao passed away due to serious complications during the observation period, while members of the public managed to raise RM60,000 to help cover the family’s medical expenses.

A 10-year-old boy went above and beyond to save his father, who was battling leukaemia, by donating his stem cells.

The young boy, Leong Kuan Xuan, made the decision after he was found to be a compatible donor for his father, Leong Jun Hao, who had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).

In a report by Guang Ming Daily, Jun Hao was a single father and was only 29 years old when he was first diagnosed. At the time of his diagnosis, he had been working as a translator for a logistics company in the Philippines.

Around August last year, Jun Hao began experiencing frequent dizziness, breathlessness, fever, and blurred vision.

After undergoing medical tests, doctors found that the cancer cells had spread aggressively throughout his body, with 75% of his blood cells being cancerous. Jun Hao was informed that a bone marrow transplant was his only chance of survival.

Kuan Xuan stepped up to help save his father

A charity organisation later shared the family’s story. According to them, Jun Hao fought with all his strength, from his initial diagnosis and rounds of chemotherapy to completing the bone marrow transplant, all in the hope of seeing his son grow up.

Once Kuan Xuan learned that he was a match for his father, the boy began preparing to undergo the procedure. This included four consecutive days of injections to stimulate stem cell production in his body.

In addition, he underwent two peripheral blood stem cell collection procedures under general anaesthesia.

The family’s story quickly gained traction among Malaysians, many of whom stepped forward to help cover the medical costs.

According to the charity organisation, in just one hour and 48 minutes, the public successfully raised RM60,000, which was needed for the treatment and stem cell procedures.

Jun Hao later successfully underwent the bone marrow transplant and was subsequently placed under a critical observation period in the hospital.

Tragedy strikes again

Despite the successful transplant, Jun Hao unfortunately passed away after developing serious complications during the observation period.

The charity organisation went on to express its gratitude to members of the public who had supported the family throughout their journey.

“On behalf of the family, One Hope Charity & Welfare would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who extended their help, support, and prayers."

"Throughout this difficult journey, the family received tremendous care, blessings, and support from the public. From fundraising efforts and prayers to constant words of encouragement, this warmth from society meant a great deal to Jun Hao and his family,” they added.
