To what extent are you considered noisy in a public space?
That was the question one Malaysian woman found herself asking after encountering another woman on Malaysia’s Light Rail Transit (LRT), who was reading the Quran aloud.

In a post on Threads, the woman shared that the female passenger was reciting the Quran during the train ride, with her voice growing louder as the ambient noise in the carriage increased.
While she wasn’t criticising the passenger, she wondered how others on the train might have felt in the same situation.
The post has since sparked a heated discussion among social media users. Some suggested that the passenger may have raised her voice to maintain proper tajweed (pronunciation) amid the noise, while others said they could tolerate the recitation as long as it wasn’t loud enough to cause a disturbance.

Meanwhile, one user criticised the woman for allegedly targeting religious practices while ignoring other disruptive behaviours, such as loud phone conversations and body odour.
However, the woman later defended herself, saying she was unsure how to feel about the situation and pointed to Islamic teachings that discourage loud recitations in noisy environments.
