As reported by Channel News Asia, the studies were carried out using active fault mapping and the Malaysian Seismotectonic Map, a specialised geological map that integrates data on tectonic activity, seismic history, and fault lines to help understand and predict earthquake hazards.

Following the study, Huang said that the Malaysian Seismic Hazard Map is currently being updated.

The most recent earthquake reported in the country occurred on 27 September, about 25km southeast of Batu Pahat, Johor.

The 3.5-magnitude quake has been linked to the Mersing Fault Zone, according to experts.

Although relatively mild, residents in several districts including Segamat, Yong Peng, and Kluang, reported feeling the ground shake.
