According to Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief assistant commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, preliminary investigations found that the Immigration Department truck was being driven by a 43-year-old man who was travelling from the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Office to Chow Kit to pick up detainees following an operation against undocumented migrants.
"The truck is believed to have entered the intersection while the traffic light was red, with its beacon lights and siren activated. At the same time, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old man was travelling straight through the intersection after the traffic light turned green."
Zamzuri said the Proton Saga driver was believed to have been unable to avoid the Immigration Department truck, resulting in a collision.
The truck subsequently lost control and veered off course before striking the family. It also collided with an Inokom Matrix driven by a 38-year-old man, which was stationary at the intersection.
It is understood that all three drivers escaped uninjured.
The driver of the Immigration Department truck and the Proton Saga driver have since been arrested to assist with investigations. Breathalyser and preliminary urine screening tests found that both men tested negative.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
