The National Registration Department (NRD) has released a statement reminding the public that it is illegal to use another person’s MyKad to purchase subsidised fuel, even if the MyKad belongs to a family member.

Director‑General Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias said the prohibition is in line with Regulation 25 of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which states that the use or possession of another person’s identity card is an offence and may result in legal action.

If convicted, offenders may face a fine of up to RM20,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both.

“MyKad is an official identification document that cannot be used, held, or represented by any other individual. Lending or handing over a MyKad to others must be avoided to ensure that the owner does not face legal repercussions."

“Only authorised officers, such as police and JPN personnel, are permitted to hold someone else’s MyKad under specific circumstances,” he said, as reported by NST.

Additionally, he said that all counter transactions, including the purchase of subsidised fuel, must be conducted by the actual MyKad owner.
