26yo Malaysian Man Stabbed to Death in South Korea After Trying to Break Up a Fight

A Malaysian man in his 20s reportedly lost his life after being stabbed during a street brawl involving two groups of foreigners in South Korea.

According to reports, about 10 individuals were involved in the fight, which took place in Eumseong District, North Chungcheong Province. A Malaysian suspect in his 40s has since been detained.

The suspect is also believed to have been involved in other offences, including murder.

The victim received a call for help from a friend

According to the victim's sister, Ain Sephia, 25, she initially missed a call from her sister-in-law at about 1:40 AM. When she returned the call later, she learned that her brother, Ahmad Shah, 26, had passed away.

"I missed my sister-in-law's call. Then, my mother also called me and told me that my brother had been stabbed. When I returned my sister-in-law's call, she told me my brother was already at the hospital and had passed away."

"I was also told that a post-mortem had been conducted and that my sister-in-law had given her statement to the police," she said, as quoted by Harian Metro.

Ain said her brother worked at a factory in South Korea and had been living there with his wife for the past seven years.

Before the incident, Ahmad Shah had reportedly received a phone call from a friend asking for help following a fight.

"My brother was sleeping when his friend called him for help. He wanted to go and break up the fight, and my sister-in-law decided to tag along. They did not expect the fight to involve a group of men, while my brother's friend was all alone there," Ain explained.

The family is now working to bring his remains home

The family had originally planned to bury Ahmad Shah in South Korea. However, they later changed their plans after learning that funeral costs there would be significantly higher.

It is estimated that the cost of bringing Ahmad Shah's remains back to Malaysia will be between RM50,000 and RM60,000. Ain also shared that the hospital bill, amounting to RM18,000, had been settled by her sister-in-law, who sought assistance from friends.

As of now, several documentation procedures are still being finalised with the Malaysian Embassy in South Korea before the body can be flown home.

According to The Star, the family has yet to be informed when the body is expected to arrive in Malaysia, as several formalities still need to be completed.
