You've seen this one too many times in actions movies. You know, the part where someone jumps off a vehicle, soar through the air like Princess Leia and land like a gold medalist gymnast. Yes, it is very unrealistic, and we don't recommend you try it at home.

But, what if you need to get out of a vehicle in a hurry? What if the car you're in is on fire and you need to jump out? Or what if you've been kidnapped and gotten stuffed into a boot? What then? Hopefully, this article helps you give you exit options.

On A Motorcycle? Don't Jump! Fall Off Instead!

How? The force of inertia is activated as you jump off and keeps your body in constant motion. Without prior training, you would not be able to brace for the landing. Your best bet would be to wait until the motorcycle reaches a flat area with no obstacles and then fall off the bike. Yes, it is better to fall because your body recovers from the movement quicker. Slide on your back if you must, with your head tucked forward to evenly distribute the impact force. Then quickly roll away from the abductor, get up and run as fast as you can in the opposite direction.

Hopefully, your fall would have destabilised the motorcycle enough to throw off the rider, which gives you time to make your escape.

If I'm Forced Into A Car, What Then?

Assuming that there's no gun pointed at you, and you've calmed yourself down, observe your surroundings. Will you make your escape in the city or countryside? Is the ground you'll be landing on hard or soft? In any case, grab whatever soft materials you can to stuff into your clothes if possible — this will act as padding when you jump off the car. The best time to jump is when the vehicle is turning, as it would have slowed down considerably.

At the right moment, open the door wide and jump to the opposite side of the turn. If the car is turning left, jump to the right and vice versa. It is best to jump out at an angle and as far as you can. Make sure your head is further from the car than your feet, so you don't roll towards the vehicle.

As you exit the vehicle, ball yourself up as much as possible, as if you're cannonballing into a pool. Your instinct would be to catch yourself with your hands, but that's precisely what you shouldn't do, as that could cause injury to your wrists. So instead, try your best to land flat on your back which would evenly distribute the force.

Keep Rolling, Rolling, Rolling!

The moment you hit the ground, roll! This will distribute the impact, as you will experience some forceful inertia when you jump out. Once you've stopped moving, get up and run for help as far away from the main road as possible, as the car won't be able to follow you.

What If I Get Stuffed Into The Boot?

Hopefully, you're kidnappers are dumb enough to let you keep your phone. Of course, the first thing is to call the police or anyone for backup. Messaging apps these days allow you to share your location, which makes it easier to find you.

You can also feel the centre of the boot lid for a latch, cord, button or switch. Most modern cars come with such a device that allows you to open the boot lid from the inside. Pull, press or twist to open the boot. And then jump from the vehicle and roll away to safety.

If you cannot locate the boot release cord, then there is another way you can alert others of your presence. There are panels on either side of the rear that can be opened to access the rear lights. First, locate the wires and pull them all out. Next, push out the tail light's housing and stick out your hand. Hopefully, someone sees you and will call for help.

Keep Calm and Carry Out Your Escape Plan

In all situations, staying calm would lead you to solutions that you would not have thought of if you were panicking. Of course, we admit it is easier said than done, but we hope that we do the right thing at the right time.

Hopefully, you will never need this guide, but you now know what to do if you find yourself in this sticky situation. Now that you know how to exit a moving vehicle, you can file this knowledge under "information you hope you never have to use".
