Way before the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) assembled, you would agree that the original 'Spider-Man' trilogy was one of the best superhero movie franchises of all time.

In fact, some would even argue that Tobey Maguire was the best 'Spider-Man', and fans would say that director Sam Raimi was the true revolutionist of superhero films.

That's probably the reason why Raimi has been tapped to direct 'Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness'.

One of his favourites

The 60-year-old director broke the news while promoting his brand new horror series '50 States of Fright'.

While chatting with entertainment site Comingsoon.net, Raimi recalled a little 'Doctor Strange' Easter Egg in 'Spider-Man 2'.

Sam Raimi is back.
In the scene, J. Jonah Jameson and Ted Hoffman were discussing villain names for Octo Octavious, and before they settled on Dr. Octopus, they hovered on the name Dr. Strange, to which Jameson said the name has already been taken.

"When we had that moment in 'Spider-Man 2', I had no idea that we would ever be making a 'Doctor Strange' movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie.

"I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project,” he was quoted as saying.

Raimi taking over the director's chair (the original director, Scott Derrickson, left the project in January citing "creative differences") is probably a good thing, because Raimi did mention that Doctor Strange is one of his favourite superheroes growing up.

"I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me, he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters,” he was quoted as saying.

'Doctor Strange 2' will also star Scarlett Witch.
'Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness' will see Benedict Cumberbatch reprising his role as the titular character, while Elizabeth Olsen will be appearing in the movie as Scarlett Witch.

Filming for the movie was supposed to start in May, but the current COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a spannar into the works.

But hey, signing a true superhero movie OG up to direct the movie is a positive start, right?
