Any one who has watched 'Joker' would agree that it is a very hard film to process.

While the film was dubbed as a masterpiece by a lot of film critics, we have to say that it left us with more questions than answers.

One of those questions that have been bugging us is whether Sophie, Arthur Fleck's neighbour-slash-love interest, managed to make it out alive after a terrifying encounter with the Joker in her own apartment.

Well, after a month of speculation, we finally have an answer.

But before we move on, we feel like we need to say this: spoiler alert, so if you haven't seen 'Joker' yet, scroll towards the end really fast!

Did she live to tell the tale?
Almost towards the end of the movie, we see Sophie (played by Zazie Beetz) walking into her apartment's living room after putting her daughter to sleep, only to find Arthur (played by Joaquin Phoenix) sitting on her couch.

The plot twist then reveals that the budding romance that they've been sharing in the entire movie was actually just in Arthur's head (the shock!).

Sophie begged Arthur to not hurt her or her daughter, but the next scene shows Arthur walking out of her apartment, and Sophie was never shown on screen again, leaving many people wondering if Arthur may have killed her.

If this question has been bugging you, fret not; the film's director Todd Phillips is here to save the day.

The love story that never was.
During an interview with entertainment website IndieWire, he revealed the Sophie's fate.

He doesn’t kill her. Definitively. As the filmmaker and the writer, I’m saying he doesn’t kill her.

"And most people that I’ve spoken to think he didn’t kill her because they understand this idea that he’s only killed people that did him wrong, so to speak.

"She had nothing to do with it. Most people understood that he was living by – even as a villain – a certain code. We thought when he kisses Gary on the head, the little actor, and he runs off, he clearly has a code he lives by. Of course he didn’t kill this woman down the hall and her child,” Phillips was quoted as saying.

Phew, we finally have an answer!
Phillips went on to reveal that there's a scene later in the movie where Sophie watches Joker pull the trigger on talk show host Murray Franklin (played by Robert De Niro) on TV, but he's decided to cut the scene out because that would “literally change the DNA of the film”.

So, there you have it, guys! Now you can sleep soundly at night, knowing what happened to Sophie.

We know we can.
