Who could ever forget Sir Patrick Stewart’s role as the iconic Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek? It was the mark of a generation and also inspired countless of memes for today’s generation.

Stewart last appeared on the popular inter-galactic franchise back in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. The critically acclaimed actor said that after filming of the movie wrapped up, he felt that his “time with Star Trek had run its natural course.”

Well, fans who have yearned to see this familiar face for years and hear his voice taking command will be over the moon to find out that, in a twist of events, he will be returning to Star Trek after 16 years.

Told ya he was meme-worthy in 'Star Trek'.
After being first introduced in the show in 1987, Stewart made the announcement of his return at this year’s Star Trek convention in Las Vegas and via his Twitter account, as reported by The Verge.

“It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him,” the 78-year-old actor said.

The new show however will not be a reboot of the old Star Trek series that he has previously starred in but “an exploration of the next chapter of Picard’s life".

No word yet on what the new show will be titled or when will it be released, but we can't wait to see him back on the small screen!

Long live and prosper, Captain.
