While not every artist may choose Malaysia as a stop on their tours, fans are looking forward to some big name international acts such as Justin Bieber and Jackson Wang for the Good Vibes Weekender.

However, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has now said that due to recent opposition of such events being held, they will now consider the suitability of staging such concerts in KL.

Dato’ Seri Shahidan Kassim, Minister of Federal Territories said that certain concerts – although he didn’t specify which ones – many of which that have already been approved for performance would be reviewed due to these complaints.

He added that “We shouldn’t get carried away by extreme forms of entertainment” and that they wanted to ensure that the concerts which are organised are not deemed offensive or inappropriate.

This comes in the wake of Billie Eilish’s recent sold-out concert at Stadium Bukit Jalil. PAS Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari who is also the Pasir Mas MP, made two Facebook posts alluding to concerts being held in Malaysia.

On 19 August, he said that the constant organising of concerts were insane acts that would invite the “wrath of Allah” and called upon Muslims to come together against this.

In another post on 25 August, Shaari said that PAS would play their role through cabinet members in making sure that upcoming scheduled concerts featuring international artists are cancelled because they do not align with the norms and values of the lives of Muslims in Malaysia. He warned that otherwise, the PAS Youth would not hesitate to hold nationwide protests.

Preacher Syed Mohd Bakri Syed Ishak, better known as PU Syed, also recently urged for the upcoming BLACKPINK concert on 4 March 2023 to be cancelled. He said that those who want such forms of entertainment should go to Korea or elsewhere as long as it was not Malaysia.
