Assassin's Creed The Movie Vs The Games
There it is, it's out! The movie that video game fans are calling the-one-we-hope-doesn't-suck finally has a trailer and it's looking a lot like Assassin's Creed the Not Video Game but the Yes Movie. What do we mean? Well, it features a lot of the same things that are present in all the Assassin's Creed games trailers like parkour, lots of hidden blades, perching on really high buildings, looking menacing in a hoodie, fighting multiple baddies at once – it's even got an eagle flying about giving the establishing aerial shot!
Here's a collection of .gifs from the first Assassin's Creed game's E3 trailer that may look familiar to the live-action trailer:
The eagle's establishing shot
Cut to the sweeping shot while the main character stands on a high perch brooding
Cut to killing the baddies with Wagnerian flair
Cue physics defying acrobatics
User ScreenDale on YouTube has made this compilation of all of the Creed game's trailers and you can check off most of the things we mention on the list.
If you actually took the 20 minutes it takes to sit through all those videos, we salute you. Based on the trailer, it seems like the movie can be taken as just another episode in the storied franchise with a new assassin and a slightly different Abstergo facility. Michael Fassbender is Aguilar, an assassin in 15th century Spain during the Spanish Inquisition. Also making an appearance in the movie is The Artefact, and the Templars who are after the Artefact. All very familiar to video game fans.
The movie trailer ends with a shot of the signature leap of faith found in the games sans barrel of hay. From that height, we don't really know what he could possibly land in and survive. Maybe he lands into a tub of gelatin. Regardless, it looks as if the movie will move between 15th century Spain and modern day Abstergo facility quite frequently though we hope those sequences in the movie aren't as boring as the games.
The movie debuts on 21 December 2016, right after Rogue One the week before. Bold move.
