In our multicultural society where Malays, Indians, Chinese, and people of various other ethnicities live together in peace and harmony, many of us come from mixed heritage backgrounds. Thus, we shouldn’t be quick to assume someone’s race based on their skin colour or even judge someone based on their race, to begin with.

TikTok user @ezzuchang, who runs a Chinese Muslim food stall called Oppa Zuzu, boasts 321.7K followers on TikTok. Many people have assumed that he is Chinese due to his appearance despite his identifying as a Malay man.

Certain netizens have been harsh with their words in some of the comments on his social media, including, “You ini anak angkat (You’re adopted),” and “Tertukar bayi kat hosp..kena tgk CCTV (switched babies at the hospital…check the CCTV,” read another.

This led him to come up with a video introducing his family members, with the caption, “Proof all my family members are MALAY!”. He first introduced his mother, who also adopted him, explaining that she was his mother’s elder sister, who also breastfed him since he was a baby. She even cutely explained in Cantonese that he really was her son. He even introduced his adopted father, cousin, brother, and other relatives, who all confirmed that he was Malay.

In an interview with mStar, he explained that his mother is Chinese while his father is Malay. “My mother is Chinese. My late grandfather could not look after her, so she was given away to Opah, a Malay woman who adopted her. Therefore, my mother embraced Islam from a young age. Then she married a Malay,’ said Ezzu.

Proud to be Anak Melayu

He then followed it up with another video in response to the comments that accused him of being adopted. In the video, he tearfully apologised to his mother for his wrongdoings in line with the Eid season. He explained that this was his mother who had raised him like her own, and he said he didn’t care if people said that he had been picked up from the dustbin or that he had been swapped with a Chinese woman’s son at the hospital.

He also said that he didn’t care if people refused to acknowledge him as a Malay as he was proud to be an anak Melayu. This was because he had been raised with the values, lifestyle, and culture of Malays. He went on to say that he didn’t care if his ancestors were really Chinese as he had only met his ancestors in Terengganu. He tearfully embraced his mother and gave her duit Raya in appreciation.

He ended the video by sarcastically saying, “Are you all now satisfied when I admit that my mother picked me up from the dustbin?”
