Every Aidilfitri season brings with it a wave of heartfelt short films, but this year, Tak Terjawab (Unanswered), released by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), stands out for its quiet introspection and unexpected depth

Premiered as PETRA’s official 2026 festive film, it tells a story of loss, healing, and spiritual reflection, while softly nudging viewers to think about how we live, consume, and care for the world around us.

Fronted by familiar faces such as regional favourite Anna Jobling, alongside Julia Farhana and Muhsin Nadzli, Tak Terjawab immediately feels relatable. The performances are restrained yet emotionally resonant, reflecting moments many Malaysians may recognise: unresolved grief, unspoken questions, and the search for meaning amid everyday life.

What truly surprises audiences, however, is the film’s special cameo by YAB Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation. Rather than a symbolic appearance, his role forms the emotional anchor in the film’s closing act, bringing warmth, calm, and a sense of continuity to the story.

A festive story with a purpose

On the surface, Tak Terjawab unfolds like any moving Aidilfitri narrative. Families gather, silences linger, and emotions surface in the most ordinary of moments. But woven into the fabric of the story is a quieter message, one about mindfulness and sustainability.

Small, everyday actions take centre stage: being thoughtful with resources, caring for shared spaces, and making conscious choices at home. The film doesn’t preach or overwhelm. Instead, it reflects PETRA’s mission through lived experience, showing how energy-conscious habits and environmental awareness can naturally become part of daily life.

In this way, Tak Terjawab mirrors the spirit of Aidilfitri itself, a time of reflection, gratitude, and renewed intention, while gently connecting these values to how Malaysians interact with energy and water.

When leadership steps into the story

One of the film’s most distinctive elements is its whole-of-ministry approach. Alongside Datuk Amar Fadillah, several leaders within PETRA’s ecosystem take on acting roles, including the Deputy Minister (YB Dato' Sri Abdul Rahman Bin Haji Mohamad), the Secretary-General (Dato' Sri Haji Mad Zaidi Bin Mohd Karli), and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) CEO Narendran Maniam.

Their appearances feel surprisingly natural. Far from stiff or ceremonial, each performance adds a human dimension to figures often associated primarily with policy and administration.

The inclusion of IWK and other agencies highlights how interconnected the ministry’s work truly is. Energy transition and water transformation are not abstract concepts, here, they unfold through collaboration, community engagement, and the everyday choices made by individuals.

Bridging policy and home

According to scriptwriter Ayu Syuhara, the intention was always to go beyond a conventional festive tearjerker.

“We wanted ‘Tak Terjawab’ to resonate on multiple levels. It is a story about the human spirit, but it is also about our collective responsibility to the environment and the resources we share,” she shared. “By showing our leadership in relatable roles, we hope to bridge the gap between policy and the Malaysian household.”

That sentiment is evident throughout the film. Sustainability is not framed as sacrifice but as empathy, an extension of values Malaysians already hold dear, especially during Aidilfitri.

Malaysians loved it

Since its release, the short film has garnered over 20,000 views on YouTube alone, with Malaysians flocking to the comments section to praise not only the story, but also the performances across the board.

"Nice, an interesting storyline… excellent. Beneath what’s shown on the surface, there’s a deeper meaning implied. Good job."

"It brought me to tears, tastefully done. Just the right portrayal of sorrow, with a bittersweet ending. A well‑told story about coming to terms with profound loss and finding newfound peace. Beautifully crafted. Well done," said another user.
