This Kedah Man Creates Custom Figurines & Gives Out Free Toys to Kids
These guys are like Santa Claus, but they give out toys all year round on a motorcycle instead of on a sleigh. The Collectors Toy Fair Kuala Lumpur (CTFKL) and Kelab Motosikal Kecil (MyKSR) often come together for a worthy cause: tirelessly driving hundreds of kilometres to distribute toys to less fortunate children and orphans across Peninsular Malaysia.
The founder of CTFKL Wan Muhammad Aznan Wan Azmi, better known as Wan Kedah, said that they have been collecting toys such as Hot Wheels Cars and Lego to be given out to children for free around KL and Selangor Since 2012. As he was also a member of MyKSR, he had the idea of having a joint activity for the two clubs which is called ‘Ride Mainan Jatuh Ke Riba’ or which can loosely be translated as ‘Toys That Fall onto Your Lap Ride’.
Ramai tanya.. mainan2 free tu mana mai? Semua mainan tu beli.tapi ramai jugak kawan2 yg support dan bagi....terima kasih hangpa memang best.. Apa pun.. walaupun lifesohard kita kena bagi balik, walaupun kalau mainan saja.. baru lepas tu life is good.#lifesohard#ayaqmatatoy#sik pic.twitter.com/J7Jra35wj6— Wan Kedah (@Wankedah_ctfkl) February 13, 2023
They have also since expanded their cause to Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, with plans to hit more states in the future. From 2018 to 2022, they distributed 2,000 units of toys to children including those who reside in the Orang Asli settlements in Pahang.
Doing good work is not always easy and the riders often have to endure long trips on their motorcycles of between 18-20 hours a day without stopping as their free time is limited, and the riders can only carry it out during the weekends, during their off days. The clubs also do not have any official sponsors and provide toys out of their own pockets as well as donations from friends.
Toys Made Using Tears
As the tagline on his website reads, “There is no need to import everything, we are also rich with our own culture” and that certainly rings true with creative talent in our country like Wan Kedah.
He is also a maker of a custom toy company in Sik, Kedah called ‘Ayaq Mata’ which also means tears, which refers to the arduous process of creating the toys. These toys are handmade pieces which are separate from the ones that are distributed to the children and can be purchased on their website. However, one look at their website shows that these unique pieces are quickly snapped up and are labelled as being for ‘children aged 30 years and above only’.
You may be used to seeing Marvel action figures such as Iron Man or DC Comics characters such as Superman in stores but you won’t have seen anything like this before: a cameraman for the film Mat Kilau (which wasn’t for sale), Frontliners: COVID-19 heroes, and even Router Head Man (whose head changed into a PS5 after lying to his wife after buying a PS5). These figurines even come complete with hilarious comic illustrations on the back with a backstory to the characters.
Here, you can watch the process of making Majlis Pelancaran Man:
Besides being a part-time graphic design lecturer at a private college, Wan Kedah had the idea of making figurines and even cars such as the Deloton Saga after attending a toy festival in Jakarta back in 2016, where there were already many choices of locally made toys.
He became more serious about making the toys when his classes were cancelled during the MCO and he learned through friends who were in the toy-making industry as well as through books and online forums. Although the parts are mainly handmade, some small parts are created using technology and 3D. These are created between daily village routines such as tending to farm activities and fishing.
Wan Kedah currently has around 20 toy series, with 50-15 limited edition units per series. He makes 10 to 15 toys a week, with the toys priced between RM139 to RM189.
