Nothing brings Malaysians together quite like the sport of badminton and while Malaysia has produced its fair share of brilliant players, one gleaming star usually comes to mind –– Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

Besides being bestowed with various honours and accolades such as an honorary doctorate in sports science from the University Sains Malaysia, the now-retired sportsman has now added another honour to his belt –– his very own wax figure at Madame Tussauds Singapore.

Known as one of our country’s best sports players of all time, he is markedly the first athlete from Malaysia to grace the halls of Madame Tussauds. The wax figure of the former world no.1 stands alongside other sports greats such as Christiano Ronaldo and David Beckham and will remain in the Lion City until it is slated to be moved to Hong Kong as its permanent residence in the first quarter of 2023.

The wax museum is known for its painstakingly made figures which allow fans to literally reach for the stars and are available to be viewed in locations around the world.

Before his retirement due to health reasons, he placed himself in the hall of fame with a record 349 weeks as the top badminton player worldwide - spending a consecutive 199 weeks at the top spot. Besides having a mind-boggling 69 super series titles under his belt, he has also represented Malaysia as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.

The soon-to-be father of three and husband of Wong Mew Choo was put through a six-hour sitting with the team from Madame Tussauds back in November 2019 which took over 200 measurements of the iconic athlete. The wax figure is dressed in Lee’s official jersey from his final Olympics performance in Rio 2016 which the badminton star had donated to the wax museum.

Fans of the player who haven’t managed to meet the national athlete in person in our own country can check out the amazing likeness of Lee and snap endless photos with him.

Lee shared, “I’m so excited to finally be able to reveal my wax figure to fans from all around the world. A lot of time and effort has been put in by the team at Madame Tussauds. They have been so meticulous at their job recreating me and I am so grateful for this opportunity.”
