The real estate once owned by the infamous Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar has been transformed into a luxurious boutique hotel that’s fit for kings.
New York based art dealer Lio Malca renovated and turned Casa Malca into a hotel located in the Mexican beach resort of Tulum.
The property, which was abandoned after Escobar died in 1993, now houses a range of contemporary artwork from Malca’s private collection, including pieces from Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kaws.
The villa was rediscovered in 2003 and returned to its original owner. But Malca had stumbled upon it in 2012 and decided to purchase the place.
He took the nine-bedroom mansion and turned it into a 42-room five-star hotel surrounded by 180m of white sand beach.
Upon arrival, guests are greeted with Persian rugs, long drapes, sleek white walls and polished concrete floors that will make you question the cleanliness of your own bedroom floor.
From the paintings, to sculptures, to furniture designed by some of the most coveted contemporary artists, the art around the hotel is constantly rotated so returning guests will never get tired of the place.
There’s also a steam room hidden underground which lights up in different colours! This concept mirrors a James Turrell installation and exits straight to a pool.
If you didn’t know, you probably would never have guessed that one of the most notorious criminals in the world once lived here!
