Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, 8tracks, Webjay, mp3s….what do all these have in common? Well, the music of course! These digital music libraries are a group of songs that hold meaning for us, are tailored to our moods and more importantly, are being used to identify who we are.

Wait, say what? Believe it or not but people judge us based on our go-to playlist. Interesting isn’t it? Here we match 5 types of music genres to a few key personalities. Let’s see which category we fall into shall we?

#1 Heavy Metal: The gentle soul

If Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, and Iron Maiden are your jam then give yourself a pat on the back. Beneath the wild exterior and aggressive image lies a delicate soul, one who is usually introverted (surprise, surprise!) but also, one who is empathetic and extremely creative. Heavy metal lovers are actually the most chivalrous of the lot. Think Keanu Reeves with piercings and a black leather jacket.
Check out “Hallowed Be Thy Name” by Iron Maiden and see whether it’s your thing or not:

#2 Pop: The outgoing one

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have fans of pop music. If you groove to Blackpink, BTS and The Jonas Brothers (screams and faints), then my friend, you are most likely to possess an extroverted personality. This means, you are honest and you speak your mind, have high self-esteem (oh yeah baby) but can be slightly jittery at times. But then, how can we not get pumped up watching all those gorgeous people dancing to the ever so catchy tunes?
Take a peek at BTS’ “DNA” to see if you will scream and fall for their charm:

#3 Jazz / R&B: The cool guy/gal

Norah Jones and Alicia Keys are considered the queens of jazz and R&B. Go back a few decades and you might get the soothing voices of Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra. Jazz and R&B people are considered the coolest of the lot, they are open-minded and rational, possess superhuman level creativity and most importantly, they are laid back and comfortable in their own skin. These people, they be chillin’ most of the time.
Take a chill pill with Norah Jones’ “Come Away With Me”:

#4 Hip Hop: The energetic one

Kanye West, Drake, and OutKast. Ring a bell? These are one of the biggest names to have ever graced the hip hop scene. And if you live and breathe the hip hop culture then you are most likely to be an outgoing person who has zero issues in socializing. You ooze confidence and charm and are usually the life of a party. But watch it though, as the mouth may have a mind of its own sometimes. This song may be ancient but it’s definitely a gem to true hip hop lovers.

#5 Classical: The enigmatic one

If you grew up appreciating the classics and still find yourself getting goosebumps listening to Beethoven or Chopin, then you probably have an IQ way above that of all the other music lovers combined. You’re practically the living proof of the ‘Mozart Effect’ theory. You are considered more enlightened, have a greater appreciation for creative arts and have more empathy towards others. Think Tun M, very old, but definitely not your average Joe.
Let’s see if Beethoven’s “Silence” will put you to sleep or perk you up:

So do you think if your personality is truly reflected in your choice of music? Some might say yes, others might differ. But don’t let that stop you from listening to your favourite tunes. You are who you are, don’t let anyone (or tunes) tell you otherwise. To hear more about judgment, in general, check out WTF episode 13 and hear what Keanu and Zher have to say about it.
