6 Affordable Places to Get Mental Health Therapy in M’sia
Mental Health Day falls on October 10 to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilise efforts in support of mental health. As reported by NST, mental health issues are a severe problem in Malaysia, with one million people in the country aged 16 and above (4.6%) having depression, double from four years prior. If you aren’t prioritising your mental health yet, there’s no time like the present!
People usually complain about how needlessly expensive therapy is, but here are some affordable places to get mental health services:

HumanKind
HumanKind, located in various locations in KL and Selangor, provides counselling services aimed at pairing you with an individual trained in mental health to work together with you to understand your experiences and concerns and provide you with the support and tools to manage challenging situations.
They have counselling sessions every day from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, so no worries if you are worried about taking time off from work. They even offer art therapy, workshops, programs, and couples counselling.

Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association (MIASA)
This non-profit organisation was born out of the founder’s own struggles with mental health. Here, they are able to provide counselling at an affordable rate, both online and in person, or even as part of a group. Prices start at RM100 (member) and RM150 (non-members) for online sessions and RM180 (member) and RM200 (non-member) for onsite sessions.

Cara Cara
At Cara Cara, they aim to provide affordable mental fitness therapy for you to achieve personal and professional growth without breaking the bank. In-person and online therapy sessions start from RM 50 and go up to RM210. Pricings depend on professional levels, and you can select which language you feel comfortable in, including English, Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, Tamil, and even Punjabi. They even list profiles of their 29 therapists (both men and women) so you can see who fits you best.

Agape Counselling Centre Malaysia
They offer various types of services, including face-to-face counselling, video counselling, premarital counselling, and sand play therapy. Their centres are located in Penang, KL, Ipoh, Melaka, and Kota Kinabalu. Prices range from RM80 onwards.

Befrienders
This non-profit organisation provides emotional support and suicide prevention services to individuals who need a listening ear. Although many know they have a hotline (03-76272929), which runs for 24 hours daily, their services include face-to-face appointments. Just give them a call to schedule an appointment! They have nine centres nationwide, including KL, Penang, Ipoh, Seremban, Melaka, Muar, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching.

Public Hospitals & Clinics
Did you know that public hospitals provide mental health services at more affordable rates (RM35 and below in our experience), particularly for Malaysian citizens? This includes Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Hospital Tunku Azizah. You will typically need a referral from a general practitioner (GP) at a public clinic (Klinik Kesihatan) to access these services.
