By now, you guys must have heard about how the authorities discovered a tofu factory in Jalan Pudu Ulu Cheras that was so disgusting, a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officer had sworn off eating tofu after witnessing the conditions.

If you missed the boat, here’s a recap: the factory was cockroach-infested, the walls were stained black, and the staff were shirtless.

The toilet walls were also stained black and smelled foul.

The Star reported that a DBKL officer almost threw up after witnessing the filthy conditions.

An end to the nightmare

Previously, it was reported that the factory was ordered to close for 14 days under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.

However, DBKL later announced that the factory will be shuttered permanently.


The Star, quoting Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, said the factory did not have a licence from the time it was set up in 1989.

Woah, that's more than 30 years of operating illegally!

“We are not going to allow them to operate after the 14-day closure notice expires, and I have instructed my officers to check on the legality of the workers who are foreigners," he was quoted as saying.

The mayor said there were 11 workers at the factory, from Bangladesh and Myanmar.

And here's the kicker: all Myanmar workers did not have permits.

Wow, what a nightmare! We guess it's a good thing for the factory to close down permanently after all.
