What better way to end your year on a high note than by emerging as the Dubai World Superseries champions? That was the case for Malaysia’s badminton men’s doubles, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong. The pair had an astonishing feat throughout the year after they placed second at the Olympic Games in Rio and also climbed the Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking by emerging as the world’s number one men’s doubles.

The duo took only a mere 40 minutes to defeat Japan’s Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda 21-14, 21-19 at the Hamdan Sports Complex. This helped put an end to all the criticism they had to face after failing to perform well at the China and Hong Kong Opens last month.

“I have to thank the crowd here for their support and also to all the Malaysian fans for believing in us. This year has been an amazing one for V Shem and I. We have achieved a lot,” V Shem told New Straits Times.

According to Wee Kiong, the fast-paced finals match was quite challenging as the Japanese pair was in good form. Luckily for them, they managed to slow their competitors down, eventually winning the game.

As icing on the cake, our national shuttlers also made bank after walking away with a cool US$84,000 (RM376,278) in prize money while the Japanese duo settled for US$40,000 (RM179,180).

Goh V Shem also took the opportunity to share their success via his Instagram account.
