After the initial panic of stocking up face masks and sanitisers, sanity seem to have returned, but with the announcement of new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, we never know what could happen.

In light of this new development, we'd like to remind fellow Malaysians that face masks will not save you from getting infected with Covid-19 and you shouldn't be wearing them unless you are sick.

You could end up making things worse for yourself

In fact, wearing face masks when you're not sick could increase the chances of you actually falling sick, according to this report by Forbes.

The report quoted University of Iowa’s College of Medicine's infection prevention specialist Eli Perencevich as saying that a healthy person do not need a mask, nor should they be wearing one.

Unnecessary
"There’s no evidence that wearing masks on healthy people will protect them. They wear them incorrectly, and they can increase the risk of infection because they’re touching their face more often," she reportedly said.

She is not the only one who has said this.

When the virus first started spreading, our former Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye had also said that there is no need for a healthy person to use masks and experts think that it won't help anyway.

Instead, you should wash your hands often and practice good hygine.

So, try not to panic buy and stock up on surgical masks because, really; it does not help at all.

Your best chance at beating Covid-19 is by washing your hands often and practicing good hygiene.
