While the world is praying for an effective vaccine to beat the menacing COVID-19, Cambodians have turned to traditional beliefs to ward off the virus.

Villagers in some areas have resorted to putting up scarecrows to "scare" the virus away.

This isn't really uncommon in Cambodia though.

AFP reported that Cambodians usually use scarecrows known as ‘Ting Mong’ in Khmer, to ward off infectious diseases like dengue or water-borne diarrhoea.

Now, Ting Mong is being used to scare away COVID-19.

"I've set up the Ting Mong to prevent the coronavirus from threatening my family," farmer Sok Chany, 45, told AFP.

The report said Cambodians believe in animism and that spirits are tied to places, animals and things.

Well, maybe we should put up a few scarecrows here too!
