Malaysia is currently reviewing a proposal to make dashcams mandatory for all road users as part of efforts to improve road safety and strengthen regulations.

As reported by Astro Awani, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Bukit Aman is studying the suggestion, which aims to empower the public to act as the authorities’ “eyes and ears” in recording and reporting road traffic offences.

Deputy Director 1 (Enforcement/Traffic Control/Summons Management) JSPT Bukit Aman, DCP Mohd Rozi Jidin, said it may be time for dashcams, currently seen only as accessories, to be re‑evaluated by the authorities, particularly the Ministry of Transport.

“At the moment, dashcams are not compulsory but more of an accessory. But perhaps it’s time to make them mandatory for all road users so they can help authorities by recording and reporting traffic offences,” he said.

Possible incentives for reporting traffic offences

JSPT is also considering introducing a mechanism to provide merits or incentives to individuals who report traffic offences using dashcam recordings.

Mohd Rozi said that one possible incentive could be offering discounts on summonses in the future to those who actively submit information related to road traffic offences.

He added that JSPT has received positive feedback from the community, many of whom support expanding the use of dashcams as a tool to assist enforcement. However, Mohd Rozi emphasised that any use of dashcams for reporting purposes must comply with laws and guidelines that will be set by the authorities.
