M’sian Comedian Honoured With Official 'Ronny Chieng Day' in Oahu, Hawaii
Malaysian actor and comedian Ronny Chieng has racked up many achievements, such as being a regular on the popular US TV show The Daily Show, scoring his own Netflix comedy special and featuring in blockbusters such as Crazy Rich Asians and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Five Rings.
However, his latest achievement could be seen as the most monumental one as he has perhaps become the first Malaysian-born entertainer ever to be awarded his own ‘official day’ in the US.
In a social media post, the Johorian, who grew up in Singapore and the US announced that the island of Oahu in Hawaii has declared July 27 as Ronny Chieng Day.
In a social media post, Chieng wrote, “MAHALO HAWAII AND @mayorrickhnl. I HOPE I ALWAYS GIVE MORE THAN I TAKE HERE.”
The actor is currently performing at The Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu as part of his The Love to Hate It tour.
Oahu's mayor, Rick Blangiardi, signed the proclamation on July 27 as the official Ronny Chieng Day "in deep appreciation for his excellence in multi-cultural comedy and the arts and his unwavering commitment to embracing the beauty, depth, and experience of multiracial cultures".
It was reported that Chieng had lived in Oahu for a while during the filming of his comedy-drama series, Doogie Kamehāloha, M.D.
In his speech, Chieng promised to always give more than he takes from Hawaii as he gradually becomes a part of the ohana.
"I hope with this proclamation, I can go from 'grateful guest' in Hawaii to a 'member of the ohana' here," he said.
