They usually shy away from dense areas, open spaces and hide deep within the jungle.
So, it must have been quite exciting for Singaporean naturalists Dennis Chan and Neo Xiao Yun when they suddenly spotted a rare snake there recently.
The two had been out on a walk on 19 September in hopes of spotting some wild animals when they saw they beautiful, rare, Selangor mud snake.
The snake is so rare that the last time it was spotted was in 1914 - 106 years ago.

According to a report by The Straits Times, the reptile was spotted swimming in a shallow concrete drain quite close to the Nee Soon swamp forest.Dennis took a photograph of the snake and let it slither away.
That one photo has now changed the snake's status in Singapore with experts now knowing for sure that it exists in their jungles.
Experts also say that since it was spotted in Singapore, it is highly likely that the species in thriving in our jungles too - it's just that they've not been spotted yet.
