Rare Turtle With Horns On Eyelids A Hit Feature At Japanese Zoo
Have you seen a turtle with horns on its eyelids?
Probably not.
This rare turtle was discovered in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, last year, and it now resides at a local zoo.
According to a report in Japan Times, curators said it is “probably the only one in the world.”
The report said the female turtle, estimated to be 10-years-old, was caught by a man while fishing in Fuji.
He kept it in his home for a while but later gave it away to the zoo.

A unique feature

Possibly the only one in the world.
The zoo checked the turtle’s horns using an x-ray and concluded that they had been formed from dead skin cells.
The zoo is now trying to produce offspring from the rare creature by having it mate with a male Chinese pond turtle.
The eggs are expected to hatch next spring.
How exciting!
