Prime Minister Najib Razak announced on Monday that Malaysians will get to enjoy a 50 per cent discount on all MRT, LRT and Monorail rides starting Tuesday (18 July).The New Straits Times reported that the discount will run all the way to Merdeka Day, which falls on 31 August.
The announcement was made during the official launch of the second phase of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line, which began operations on Monday.
The second phase of the 51-kilometre SBK line consists of 19 new stations, seven of which are reportedly underground.
According to Najib, the trains -- which has four coaches that can carry a maximum of 1,200 passengers per journey -- will operate at a frequency of 3.5 minutes during peak hours.
The first phase of the MRT was opened to the public on 16 December 2016 and consisted of 12 stations.
According to a press release by MyRapid, the MRT line sees an average of 40,000 passengers daily, with the highest ridership in a single day recorded on Christmas Day at 67,000 passengers.
So, instead of driving to work, try taking the MRT for a change.
