Share Your Digital Road Tax with Family & Friends: Here’s How

Instead of renewing your driving licence and road tax by heading to a physical counter, there are now several ways to do it virtually. You can refer to the guide we wrote about How to Renew Your Road Tax & Driving Licence Online on MYEG. Starting 1 February 2024, Malaysians can also renew their driving licence and road tax using the MyJPJ app by the Road Transport Department (JPJ/RTD).

As reported by NST, Transport Minister Anthony Loke has said that this function will reduce the congestion at RTD counters, make it easier for the public to renew their driving licence and road tax digitally, and save time and cost. He also announced that an RM5 rebate will be given upon renewal until 31 December 2024.

Who is eligible for this initiative?

  • Note that it applies to Malaysian citizens only

  • Does not apply to foreign nationals or any pass, long-term permit, MyKAS Card or MyPR Card holders

Sharing Your Digital Road Tax

As reported by FMT, starting 2 January, the public can share their digital road tax with family members, friends, or other individuals authorised by the vehicle owner through the new ‘Kongsi LKM’ function on the app.

Loke explained, “For example, say a man intends to use his father’s vehicle for a week. The father needs to first share the digital road tax with his son through the ‘Kongsi LKM’ function on the MyJPJ app.”

  1. On the Motor Vehicle Licnse tab, tap your car's number plate and scroll to the bottom and hit "Share LKM"
  2. Type in the recipient's details including name and IC, and the duration of sharing the LKM
  3. The app will send an activation code that needs to be entered by the recipient of the digital road tax to activate the sharing
  4. The recipient of the digital road tax will also need to activate the sharing from their own phone on the MyJPJ app.

For security purposes, the MyJPJ app will delete any sharing records if they are not activated within 24 hours.

RD’s note: Personally, this sounds rather troublesome and we’d rather have the sticker already stuck onto the car.

Physical Driving Licence & Road Tax

Some extra info to take note of is that drivers and vehicle owners who are not yet ready during the interim digitisation period this year can still choose a physical driving licence and road tax. RTD will be issuing a new and standardised physical driving licence and road tax in the form of a security paper during this interim period instead of the previous plastic card and disk sticker used.

However, the road tax security paper is not mandatory and does not need to be attached or displayed on vehicle mirrors.

Digital Driving Licence

Since February 2023, Malaysians have been able to download a digital version of their driving licence via the MyJPJ app, but this is not mandatory. Here is how to get your e-Licence and e-Road Tax on the MyJPJ App
