“They still treat the office like school” - M’sians Urge Companies to Allow WFH Again as Klang Valley Traffic Worsens

TLDR

  • Traffic congestion in the Klang Valley has worsened, causing many Malaysians to spend over an hour commuting to work.
  • A former HR practitioner urged companies to reconsider work-from-home or hybrid work arrangements to ease commuting stress and improve employee morale.
  • Trust issues between employers and employees remain a key barrier to WFH, with some employers worried about staff productivity and misuse of flexible work options.

If you have been driving to work in recent weeks, you’ve probably noticed how bad the traffic has become. You’re not alone — many Malaysians are voicing their frustrations over the same issue, which seems to be happening almost everywhere in the Klang Valley.

Across social media, Malaysians are sharing that they now spend over an hour commuting to work due to the massive congestion, even though their usual drive would typically take only a few minutes.

On Threads, a former HR practitioner called on companies to reinstate work‑from‑home (WFH) or hybrid arrangements, as traffic continues to worsen and public transportation has become increasingly crowded — making daily commuting exhausting for employees.

“Companies that pushed for a full office return in 2026 should consider the WFH arrangement again. Just look at how bad the traffic is lately. Public transport is also packed," they said.

"Please normalise WFH and hybrid arrangements. The companies won’t suffer losses, and it helps boost employees’ morale by being flexible. Sincerely, an ex‑HR practitioner.”

Malaysians feel the same way

The post has since gained attention from many Malaysians who feel the same way. One user noted that one of the main reasons companies reject WFH is due to trust issues.

However, some users say they don’t entirely blame employers for avoiding WFH, as some employees have abused the arrangement in the past.

“Most big bosses are still like dinosaurs. They don’t trust their staff and always feel like the staff won’t do any work when WFH. That’s the main problem. They still treat the office like school.”

Another commented, “I would do anything to get a job that lets me WFH and be flexible. I don’t mind working overtime while balancing my personal life, rather than wasting time commuting.”

One user shared, “I agree. But most big bosses have trust issues because there have been cases of staff misusing WFH. They don’t do their work and don’t reply to WhatsApp."

"We, the middle managers, are the ones who have to deal with this. When we refuse to allow WFH, staff get angry. In the end, we all have to sacrifice. I’m so stressed with the traffic these days.”
