TLDR
- A woman who was 38 weeks pregnant in Selayang was accused of shoplifting by a supermarket staff member despite there being no clear evidence, sparking outrage among netizens.
- The staff member allegedly asked the woman to show her Buku Pink and her stomach as proof, a move many considered invasive and inappropriate.
- The couple has since lodged a police report, while Lotus's Malaysia is conducting an investigation into the incident.
On Sunday (12 July), an incident took place at a grocery and hypermarket chain in Selayang that has since triggered a massive backlash from Malaysians over the treatment of customers and the attitude of its staff.
What was supposed to be a routine grocery run for a couple turned into a viral controversy after a heavily pregnant woman was accused of stealing.
What made matters worse was that a female staff member later admitted she had never actually seen the woman take anything, but accused her anyway because she believed the woman's belly did not look like a "pregnant belly".
“What are you hiding in your belly?”
In a post on Threads, the husband, known as Fareez, said he and his wife, who was 38 weeks pregnant, were stopped by a male staff member after paying for their groceries.
Without any proper explanation, the staff member then turned to his wife and demanded to know what she was hiding in her belly.

Fareez, who was understandably shocked, asked for clarification about the accusation but was instead met with another demand from the staff member, who asked his wife to produce her "Buku Pink", a maternity health record booklet.
On top of that, the staff member also wanted his wife to show her stomach to prove she was not hiding any stolen items.
“At that moment, I completely lost my patience. I told them if they were accusing someone of stealing, then they needed to provide proof, produce a witness, and call the supervisor immediately."
He added, "Instead, we were made to stand there for almost 20 minutes, surrounded by other shoppers, while they tried contacting their supervisor.”
Netizens were equally outraged
Needless to say, many Malaysians resonated with Fareez and were outraged by what had happened.
“Is he stupid? Doesn't Lotus's have a sensor that will make noise if you try to exit without paying? What kind of stupidity is this?”
Meanwhile, other users also shared their experiences with the same staff member.
“Bro, this staff member is problematic. He once used inappropriate language and had an unsuitable conversation in front of customers,” shared a user.

The issue also gained the attention of a Malaysian health advocacy page, which proceeded to explain why the "Buku Pink" is considered private.
“The Buku Pink is a pregnant woman's health record. It may contain medical history, examination findings, blood test results, and information regarding both the mother and baby. It is sensitive personal data and should be treated with privacy and respect.
They added, "The staff can ask politely, but the pregnant mother has every right to refuse.”

A police report was filed
Although the incident ended with both staff members apologising to the couple, the damage had already been done.
In an update post, Fareez said he had lodged a police report regarding the incident. According to him, the issue goes beyond a simple apology.

“What happened to my wife is not a small matter that I can ignore. The dignity of a heavily pregnant woman was trampled by a baseless accusation."
"I believe in the process. I believe in justice, and I also believe that every action has its consequences. This is just the beginning. God willing, there are still more steps to come,” he added.
At the end of the post, Fareez said he and his wife were touched by the overwhelming support from Malaysians and thanked everyone who had sent their kind regards.
Lotus's Malaysia launches a probe
Meanwhile, Lotus's Malaysia said it was aware of the viral incident and would be conducting a thorough investigation.
“We are deeply sorry to learn that the matter has caused distress to the customer. We take the concerns raised very seriously. We are conducting a thorough investigation to gain a better understanding of what happened.
They shared, "We have also contacted the customer involved to better understand their experience.”
Lotus's also said that, as the investigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate for the company to provide further comment at this time.
