Nestlé Claims That There’s Only Six Per Cent Of Sugar In Each Serving Of Milo
More than a week ago, Malaysians got a rude awakening when entrepreneur Vishen Lakhiani uploaded a video to his Facebook page claiming that every 100g of Milo has 40 per cent sugar content in it.
What’s even more worrying is that even the Ministry of Health endorses the drink as a ‘healthier choice’ on the packaging.
We then asked a dietitian to find out if it’s really healthy to consume Milo.
Following the release of the video, Nestlé released a statement then saying that the sugar content in Milo comes naturally from cocoa powder, malt (barley), and milk.
A week has passed since the company released the statement but it looks like the controversy has yet to simmer down.

Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad senior nutritionist Nurul Iliani Ahmad said in a statement that it is recommended to add five teaspoons of Milo into a cup of 200ml hot water.
"This serving contains only 6 per cent sugar. Out of this 6 per cent, 3 per cent is natural sugar (from milk and malt) and 3 per cent is added sugar.”
The 40 per cent of sugar content as shown on the label is actually Milo powder before it is mixed with water, said Nurul. After adding 200ml of water, the sugar content should only be up to 6 per cent.
"We encourage consumers to prepare Milo with powdered milk and or water, and enjoy it as part of a balanced diet.”
Well, high sugar content or not, we can vouch that a lot of Malaysians out there who have been consuming Milo for decades will still be loyal to the brand and love it regardless.
