  • The Malaysian government is offering a 50% toll discount for two days, starting from 12:01 AM on 18 March until 11:59 PM on 19 March, for Class 1 private vehicles, except at border toll plazas.
  • The initiative aims to ease the financial burden on the public during the Hari Raya festive period and is expected to cost the government RM21.03 million.
  • Traffic congestion has been reported at several key locations, such as from Gombak to Genting Sempah, and road users are advised to observe speed limits and maintain a safe following distance.

In conjunction with Hari Raya, which is just days away, the Malaysian government has announced a special toll discount for motorists nationwide.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government will offer a 50% discount on toll charges nationwide for two days. The 48‑hour discount period began today (18 March) at 12:01 AM and will run until 11:59 PM on 19 March.

The discount, however, applies only to Class 1 private vehicles and excludes tolls at the country’s border crossings, such as the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and the Tanjung Kupang toll plaza in Johor.

The initiative is understood to be one of several measures introduced by the government to ease the financial burden on Malaysians during the festive period. Other measures include an additional public holiday, the early disbursement of Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) aid, and special cash assistance for civil servants.

In a report by Malay Mail, Anwar added that the toll discount initiative is expected to cost the government approximately RM21.03 million in compensation to toll concessionaires.

He also advised Malaysians to spend prudently during Hari Raya, citing ongoing global economic uncertainty.

Meanwhile, traffic from the Klang Valley heading towards the east coast began building up this morning as travellers started returning to their hometowns for Raya.

In a separate report, a spokesperson for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said congestion was reported between Gombak and Genting Sempah, as well as from Bukit Tinggi to Lentang.

Traffic flow towards the north and south, however, remained smooth, with minor congestion reported between Bandar Baharu and Jawi due to a broken‑down lorry. LLM predicted that traffic volume would increase further from midday following the toll discount announcement.

Motorists have been urged to adhere to speed limits and maintain a safe distance between vehicles throughout their journeys.
