"Was this made by AI?" Sports Ministry's 2027 SEA Games Mascot Leaves Malaysians Unimpressed

Just yesterday, the government unveiled the new mascot for the 2027 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games.

The official mascot, named TUAH, draws inspiration from the image of a dynamic, confident, and approachable modern-day hero. It also incorporates the colours of the Jalur Gemilang.

According to Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, TUAH embodies the spirit of unity, while its Jalur Gemilang-inspired colours instil a sense of pride among athletes and the public.

Malaysians are less enthusiastic

However, the mascot's unveiling was not a huge hit among locals.

On social media, many Malaysians criticised TUAH's design, claiming that it does not reflect the country's diverse cultures.

Furthermore, others alleged that the design lacks originality and appears AI-generated.

"It's not looking good at all. I saw someone design another poster and logo featuring a keris and a tiger for the SEA Games. I thought that one was the official mascot because you could clearly see the Malaysian identity. This mascot looks lazy. It has no Malaysian identity and looks like an AI-generated robot."

One user commented, "Another AI slop. As if our country has no talented artists and designers."

"People are angry because there's no Malaysian identity and the unnecessary use of AI. As if there are no young and creative talents out there," said a user.

"Why don't you use our animals as the mascot, such as tigers, elephants, sun bears, or eagles? There are so many to choose from, but instead, you're being lazy. Then you have the audacity to be proud of AI-generated work."

One user also pointed out that the government could have simply revived the old tiger mascot and given it a new look.
