Experience 50 Films, Including Award-Winning ‘Abang Adik,’ for Just RM10 Per Ticket at the 7th MIFFest

The annual Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) is back for its 7th edition. It commenced on Sunday (July 20) with grand celebrations at The Exchange TRX, marking the start of a week-long cinematic extravaganza.
This year’s theme, “Uncaged,” is brought to life with an impressive lineup of 50 films from 30 countries, presented in over 35 languages. The lineup includes a world premiere, six Asian Premieres, nine Southeast Asian premieres and 20 Malaysian premieres.
The festival which takes place from July 21 to 28 gives attendees the opportunity to engage in an array of screenings, insightful discussions, and exciting events. Starting yesterday, film enthusiasts can dive into the diverse film offerings at GSC MyTown and GSC LaLaport BBCC.

Festival highlights

This year’s festival kicked off with the spine-tingling Malaysian horror film “Indera” by acclaimed director Woo Ming Jin, featuring the talented Shaheizy Sam and Azira Shafinaz.
The festival will conclude on a high note with the double feature of “Love Lies” by Ho Miu Ki and “Peg O’ My Heart” by Nick Cheung.
MIFFest's competitive segment features a compelling lineup of films such as local favourites Abang Adik by Jin Ong, alongside international entries such as Betania (Brazil) directed by Marcelo Botta, Every You Every Me (Germany) by Michael Fetter Nathansky and In the Land of Brothers (France) by Alireza Ghasemi and Raha Amirfazli.
Also in competition are Rapture (India, China), Sujo (Mexico), The Editorial Office (Ukraine), The Great Phuket and Within a Budding Grove (both from Hong Kong), with the latter making its world premiere.

A-Lister Selections: The A-Lister section showcases recent acclaimed films, including Evil Does Not Exist (Japan), Perfect Days (Japan), Anatomy of a Fall (France), Snow Leopard (China), Thelma (United States), and Elegies (Hong Kong), all making their Malaysian premiere. Malaysian Dispatch: Representing local cinema, MIFFest presents Everything, Everywhere (Japan) from Osaka-based Malaysian director Kah Wai Lim, Budak Flat, and Hungry Ghost Diner (both from Malaysia). Neon: Neon celebrates independent voices with titles such as The Lyricist Wannabe (Hong Kong, Taiwan), Dreaming & Dying (Singapore), Manjummel Boys (India), All the Long Nights (Japan), Salli (Taiwan), Blesser (South Korea), The Woman Who Cries (Brazil) and Drifting Flowers, Flowing Days (Japan). Afterdark: For thriller and horror enthusiasts, the Afterdark section presents Tenement (Cambodia), I Saw the TV Glow (United States), Hood Witch (France), and Forest Killer (Czech Republic), each offering a unique perspective on the darker aspects of human experience. Master at Work: In tribute to the late Malaysian filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad, MIFFest will screen her acclaimed works, including Muallaf, Gubra, Sepet, and Yasmin-san. Wavemaker: MIFFest honors Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda and features his masterpieces, such as Still Walking, Our Little Sister, and Broker (South Korea). The Journey of Christine Hakim: Indonesian actress and producer Christine Hakim will be celebrated with screenings of her notable films, such as Serambi and Leaf on a Pillow.
