Spooky season is upon us and what better way to celebrate the festivities than with a creepy local production directed by a cinema legend? Kabir Bhatia, famous for films like Setem, Pulang, Sangkar and Cinta return to the big screen with a blood-splattering phenomenon called ‘Talbis Iblis’.

‘Talbis Iblis’, also called ‘The Devil’s Deception’, follows the tragic story of Hajar, played by Azira Shafinaz (who’s also in One Cent Thief) who was cast away to a secret place in order to give birth. Together with her husband, played by Amir Nafis (KL Gangster Underworld), the pair seeks the help of Mak Ju, a mysterious midwife living in a large but creepy bungalow deep within the jungle.

The movie also stars Zul Ariffin, Jay Iswazir, Sherie Merlis, Izzy Reef, Daniella Sya, Zaftfarrel Mikhael Felton, Putri Syahadah Nurjannah and the legendary Nasha Aziz herself.

In the press conference, Nasha Aziz admitted that she’s quite selective of the projects she would work on but after hearing the original idea from Ajami Hashim, the actress donned her red dress for the role of Mak Ju.

Frankly, one of the biggest appeals of the movie is the premise; a tale that explores the topic of Nusantaran taboos surrounding childbirth and the almost folklorish obsession with witchcraft solutions. Mak Ju, albeit a midwife, also practices the mystical dark arts for her own personal gain after a heartbreaking backstory in the past. Aided by Nasir, played by Zul Ariffin, Mak Ju runs a sketchy, traditional child-receiving service shrouded by mystery.

Another factor that adds to the creeps is definitely the haunting soundtrack written and composed by songstress Heidi Moru and Lo Shi Seng. The hair-raising nusantaran elements in the track will definitely keep you up at night, constantly looking over your shoulder - in case Mak Ju decides to jumpscare you out of nowhere.

On top of that; knowing Kabir Bhatia’s track record in producing compelling visuals in the past, it’s fair to feel excited about Talbis Iblis.

The movie will be out in cinemas starting on the 20th of October, 2022.
