From Books to Financial Aid: Malaysian Woman Shares How Her Teacher Shaped Her Future 20 Years Ago

TLDR

  • Nor A’in Ahmad, a police officer, recently managed to reunite with her Geography teacher, Cikgu Koay Aun Chuan, who had helped her greatly during a time of financial hardship while she was studying.
  • Cikgu Koay assisted Nor A’in in paying her STPM examination fees and often supported her quietly by covering small expenses, such as buying reference books and giving her money for food.
  • Cikgu Koay’s kindness has since gained widespread attention on social media, serving as a reminder that the sincere contributions of teachers will always be remembered by their students.

Most of us can probably recall at least one teacher who left a lasting impression on our lives. It may not have been because they were the strictest or funniest teacher in school, but because they showed us kindness when we needed it most.

While teachers are tasked with educating their students, some go above and beyond their responsibilities in ways that are rarely seen or acknowledged. A word of encouragement, a small gesture of support, or a helping hand during difficult times can have a profound impact that lasts well beyond the school years.

This was certainly the case for one Malaysian woman, who recently got the opportunity to reunite with a teacher who had helped her tremendously more than two decades ago.

Nor A’in Ahmad, 41, who now works as a police officer, spent years looking for her former Geography teacher, Koay Aun Chuan.

Despite leaving school more than a decade ago, Nor A’in said she is still indebted to the teacher who taught her at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kuala Ketil, Kedah.

She wanted to pawn her jewellery to pay for her studies

Nor A’in said that, back when she was a Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) student, she faced financial difficulties that made it hard for her to pay her examination fees.

In an interview with Harian Metro, she shared that she came from a less fortunate family. Her mother, Minah Man, 72, worked in a factory, while her late father, Ahmad Che Man, was a rubber tapper.

“At that time, many students had already paid their STPM fees, and Cikgu Koay came to see me and asked when I would pay mine, as there was only a week left before the closing date.”

Nor A’in said the teacher asked her about the money several times, but she had no choice but to postpone the payment while waiting for her mother’s salary.

In her desperation, she even told him she would go to a pawn shop to pawn some of her jewellery, but was unable to do so as many shops were closed for the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday.

But Cikgu Koay didn’t let me pawn my jewellery and promised to help. Not long after, another teacher gave me money to pay the fees, thanks to Cikgu Koay, who helped me secure financial assistance. I was so touched that I cried after leaving the staff room. I felt embarrassed too because I thought I was troubling others with my problems,” she said.

He never made a show of it

Nor A’in recalled that her teacher’s kindness didn’t end there.

Throughout her school days, he would keep an eye out for her and cover any small costs he could, often without drawing attention to himself.

She said there were times when her teacher would collect small amounts of money from each student in class for photocopies of learning materials. However, when he reached Nor A’in’s table, he would instead place a 20-cent coin on it and tell her to use it to buy some food.

“Cikgu Koay also once bought me reference books. To be honest, I don’t think I could ever repay his kindness.”

In a TikTok video, Nor A’in shared her reunion with her beloved teacher. Though he is now in his 70s and has long retired, he is reportedly in good health despite having been involved in a road accident several years ago.

Nor A’in’s posts have since gained attention from other Malaysians who were touched by the teacher’s kindness. Others have also shared their own experiences with kind teachers, proving that a good deed, no matter how big or small, will always be remembered.
