"It's not just about getting rich" - Malaysian Vendor in Melaka Has Been Selling 50-Sen Nasi Lemak for 20 Years

TLDR

  • A vendor in Melaka has been selling nasi lemak for just 50 sen for 20 years despite the rising cost of living.
  • Anuar Mohd Sani, 54, has maintained the low price to help customers such as villagers, fishermen, and nearby workers, choosing not to raise prices even as ingredient costs increase.
  • The stall sells over 200 packets of nasi lemak daily and is able to sustain its operations and pay the salaries of seven employees with modest profits.

With the rising cost of living, even a simple meal can easily set you back more than RM10 — especially in city areas where prices seem to climb year after year. Finding something affordable, filling, and genuinely satisfying feels increasingly rare these days.

But in Melaka, one humble vendor has quietly defied that reality, serving up packets of nasi lemak for just 50 sen for the past 20 years.

For Anuar Mohd Sani, 54, business is more than just a way to get rich. What’s more important is creating something that customers will keep coming back for.

In an interview, Anuar said he inherited the shop from his parents, who previously sold nasi lemak too — but at a lower price of only 30 sen.

Anuar added that when he took over the shop 20 years ago, he increased the price of the nasi lemak to 50 sen. Despite the rising costs of ingredients such as coconut milk, rice, and sugar, he has no plans to raise prices, as he wants to ease the financial burden on his regular customers, most of whom are villagers, fishermen, and nearby workers.

The shop has been around for about 50 years and is well known among villagers for its cheap nasi lemak.

“I had a customer from out of town come by, and they were so shocked when they found out the price of the nasi lemak. They bought 10 packets, and when I told them it only cost RM5 in total, they were baffled and even came back to double-check."

Aside from the 50-sen nasi lemak, Anuar also sells beverages at his stall for only RM1. There are other dishes available as well, including another version of nasi lemak made with basmati rice, which costs RM2.50.

The stall is open daily except Fridays, from 7 AM to 3 PM. Anuar said he sells over 200 packets of nasi lemak on weekdays and about 400 packets on weekends.

Despite the modest profits, Anuar said it is enough to sustain operations and pay the salaries of his seven employees.

“As long as I can still manage the costs, I will continue to maintain prices. Although I don’t make much profit, I’m satisfied knowing I can help villagers enjoy a meal at an affordable price."
